Family Ark is the second release of Philadelphia-based musician Jon Coyle, and his first through the Austin, Texas label Marmara Records. As a founding member of the eclectic and highly regarded experimental-pop group Son Step (NYC/Philadelphia), Coyle has performed as a lead vocalist, keyboardist, and percussionist, and has contributed to three releases- Spooky Tooth EP (2011), Here Comes Dreamboat (2012), and the upcoming Ova Nova EP. His debut solo release Night Cycles (2012) offered a first glimpse into a hauntingly imaginative sound that blurs the lines between acoustic nuance and electronic sound-painting. Coyle’s unique songwriting style (he half-jokingly refers to it as “sleepwalk”) combines delicately woven rhythms and lyrical structures with a loose playfulness that at times seems to slip into a barely-detectable melancholia. A wide variety of instruments and sonic textures can also be heard in his work. For Family Ark, initial instrumental tracks were recorded with close friends and collaborators Pat Lamborn and Ian Hooper, and in the following months additional layers of lyrics and homemade sounds were incorporated.
